COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Scottsdale-based Family Promise of Greater Phoenix has renamed its Bellview living facility Cheryl’s House and established the Cheryl Chewning Memorial Fund to support two families transitioning from homelessness after a long-term employee passed in May 2025.  Scottsdale Independent

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Los Angeles-based Innovative Dining Group plans to open Arizona’s first BOA Steakhouse in Old Town Scottsdale in the first half of 2026. The steakhouse will launch at 7134 E Stetson Drive in the former STK location as the group returns to the Valley.  ABC15 Arizona

CULTURE NEWS

  • Scottsdale director Luca Patruno’s horror film The Vindicator has premiered on Apple TV & Amazon Prime. It follows podcasters who travel to Arizona for a live taping that goes wrong, blending true-crime themes with a local twist.  KJZZ
  • Ballet Arizona added five new dancers for its 2025-26 season under artistic director Daniela Cardim. The company now features 33 artists who will perform productions including The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty (season repertoire announcement).  Arizona Digital Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chaparral High School graduate Maxwell Gibson from Scottsdale was named to Westminster College dean’s list for fall 2025 after earning the required 3.6 GPA — he is majoring in accounting and finance.  Scottsdale Independent
  • Scottsdale Unified School District must close two additional schools by the 2028–29 school year for fiscal reasons, following the Dec. 9 closure of Pima Elementary and Echo Canyon K-8. Superintendent Dr. Scott Menzel noted the proposed schools serve fewer than 400 students.  Scottsdale Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arizonans filing tax returns might need to change them because new forms show a $750 gap on the standard deduction + Gov. Hobbs ordered only parts of the federal tax law be used. Lawmakers will look at tax bills when the session begins next week.  KJZZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flu cases in Arizona jumped by 35% last week—more than 2,200 new cases were reported, bringing this season’s total to nearly 6,900. Valleywise Health officials said most severe cases are among unvaccinated patients and the peak is expected after holiday gatherings and school returns.  KJZZ
