CRIME NEWS

  • Arizona's Medicaid agency was defrauded of up to $2.5 billion during 2019—2023, and at least 26 people and companies have been convicted for schemes that exploited vulnerable patients seeking addiction treatment. More indictments and additional sentences are expected as legal actions continue amid critics calling for accountability over early signs of fraud.  The Arizona Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maricopa County Sheriff's Office plans to test high-tech wristbands that will monitor new inmates' heart rate and temperature after a rise in jail deaths. If approved, the program will use funds from inmate charges and is part of a larger spending request (similar to a smartwatch).  The Arizona Republic
  • Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, along with the FTC and other state attorneys general, joined a lawsuit against John Deere over repair restrictions that force farmers to use only authorized dealers—filed in an Illinois federal court in February, the suit aims to lower repair costs and long delays for local farmers and ranchers.  Scottsdale Independent

  • Local mother Vanessa Ayala, who lost her 17-year-old son to opioids, will speak at New Covenant Lutheran Church (15152 Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd) at 5:30 p.m. on May 7 to discuss drug dangers including the opioid crisis, vaping and the effects of smartphones and social media. Educator Stephanie Siete, with over 25 years of prevention experience and recognized by the FBI, will lead the discussion while vendors offer additional information and Narcan is available.  Scottsdale Independent

  • Quarterback Sam Leavitt led Arizona State to an 11-win season and a College Football Playoff run last year while earning $3 million in deals and donating his merchandise royalties back to the team.
