COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thirty-one Girl Scouts earned the Gold Award for their community projects that address challenges such as mental health and environmental protection—an honor given by Girl Scouts—Arizona Cactus-Pine Council that recognizes their leadership and skills; the award is the highest accolade in Girl Scouting for grades 9 to 12.  Arizona Digital Free Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Scottsdale had fewer violent crimes and burglaries last year with violent crimes falling 12% and burglaries dropping 17% from before; property crimes, fraud cases and homicides also fell with homicides dropping from seven to one. On April 7, Interim Police Chief Joe LeDuc asked City Council for 22 new officers and more staff as part of a $210 million police budget plan (including a $50 million transfer to the public safety retirement fund) to help handle rising costs.  Scottsdale Progress

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Ravenscroft in Scottsdale announced its May lineup featuring jazz shows starting with the VJC Senior Showcase on May 2 at 7 p.m.—the concert series finale with KNEEBODY is set for May 17, with additional events through May 30.  Scottsdale Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Katie Hobbs signed a bill on Friday that allows Axon to build 1,895 apartments as part of its plan to create a world headquarters in Scottsdale. Axon will develop the campus on 76 acres near North Hayden Road and Loop 101 and include a headquarters, condos, retail buildings, a hotel, and restaurants as some local residents and officials remain concerned about the project.  Scottsdale Independent
  • Gov. Katie Hobbs signed Senate Bill 1543 on April 18—allowing Axon to bypass a planned Scottsdale rezoning vote and build 1,900 apartments plus a hotel with a spaceship-themed office in North Scottsdale. Some state senators and local leaders oppose the bill and expect legal challenges as the project moves forward.  East Valley Tribune
