Good morning, Scottsdale.

Four SRP employees were honored with the Presidents’ Volunteer Spirit Award for volunteer work that supported local nonprofits across the Valley.

Their 2024 efforts included over 20,200 service hours at more than 190 organizations (from wildlife conservation to community forestry).

Construction began on April 1 to transform the former Tonalea Elementary at 68th and Oak into a multi-purpose facility offering eight sand volleyball courts, a basketball court, a soccer field, and a re-surfaced parking lot—community meetings resumed in 2020 to outline the project—and the first phase is expected to finish after 16 weeks in the third week of July.

Scottsdale Plaza Resort will get a $42M renovation and be rebranded as Miralina Resort and Villas, with plans announced on May 7 that spark a major transformation — the resort has held a special-use permit since July 22.

Scottsdale City Council approved spending $100,000 to hire outside legal counsel to review the constitutionality of a new law that allows Axon to build an international headquarters with housing, restaurants, and a hotel—some councilmembers opposed the cost for fear it might hurt ongoing negotiations while others saw it as necessary due diligence.

Scottsdale Aviation Director Gary P.

Mascaro retired on May 7 after more than 26 years in aviation — including 15 years at Scottsdale Airport — where he led major projects such as hosting two Super Bowl events and redeveloping the terminal area; Rick Wielebski will serve as interim aviation director.
