EDUCATION NEWS

  • Scottsdale native Jake Okun (a recent master’s graduate in robotics and autonomous systems) was named ASU’s University Outstanding Graduate and received the Impact Award for his service, leadership, and volunteer work at the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. He served as the Graduate Convocation Speaker on May 15 at Desert Financial Arena where he reflected on his journey in robotics and innovation.  Scottsdale Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Hobbs signed a law that limits liability for utilities starting wildfires if they follow an approved risk mitigation plan — the law also lets utilities transfer some debt to low-interest bonds, which critics say might shift costs to ratepayers.  KJZZ
  • Gov. Katie Hobbs ordered flags lowered on Thursday at state buildings — a tribute to fallen law enforcement on National Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week. She urged local businesses and organizations to lower their flags as well.  KTAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wildfire smoke drifting in from other areas may lower air quality in Scottsdale, causing burning eyes, runny nose, scratchy throat, headaches, and bronchitis while worsening heart and lung conditions. State agencies offer hourly air quality reports and forecasts to help residents decide whether to limit outdoor activities + follow health precautions.  The Arizona Republic

  • Water parks across the Valley offer residents cool ways to beat the heat this summer with attractions that range from lazy rivers to record-breaking slides. Great Wolf Lodge in Scottsdale runs an 80,000-square-foot indoor park at 84°F, while Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, Golfland Sunsplash, Mesa’s Riptide slide, H2-Woah, Oasis Water Park, Aqua Park and Revel Surf each add unique thrills—catering to families and adventure seekers alike.  City Sun Times
