- ➤ Scottsdale Arts is accepting applications for its Community Arts Grant Program to fund nonprofit arts organizations for projects in Scottsdale—applications open online on July 14 at 11:59 p.m. and requests can cover activities from September 1 to July 31 while funding is provided by the city for groups with a three-year history of programming. - ➤ Scottsdale Community College is teaming with Advance Community and Neighborhood Outreach Access to Health to offer a new certificate for community health workers. The program takes one semester—plus eight weeks of hands-on training—and gets students ready for jobs in hospitals, clinics and community agencies. Scottsdale Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Scottsdale City Council meets today at 5 p.m. to review a $2.2 billion budget that cuts $90 million and to consider a property tax increase that would raise the primary levy by $5.85 million, causing a $500,000 home's tax bill to go from $4,658 to $4,898 — the meeting follows months of presentations and includes plans for police salary increases. The council may adjust budget expenditures on June 10 but cannot raise the overall spending amount. Scottsdale Progress
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Cancer survivor Sonya Engle, who is also Sonora Quest Laboratories' COO, said June is National Cancer Survivors Month and urged local women to take advantage of new screening methods like the digital cytology system introduced in March and an HPV self-collection test offered in healthcare settings — she expects these advances will help detect cancer sooner.
