Good morning, Scottsdale. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 12th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Child Crisis Arizona partnered with local groups to offer free pool fences for 20 families chosen earlier this year, and installations will happen in June— a measure to keep children safe around backyard pools. This effort helps ensure that families in the Valley have a critical safety tool as the summer months approach.  ABC15 Arizona
  • Salt + Lime Modern Mexican Grill in Scottsdale is helping local foster youth by offering unlimited chips and salsa for $5 during its Chips for Charity program this July; a portion of the proceeds will boost the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation’s Childhood Activities fund. The donation supports costs for activities such as field trips, instrument rentals, and summer camps.  Scottsdale Independent

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Eight locations of the popular 24-hour Mexican chain Filiberto's, including one in Scottsdale at 9150 E. Indian Bend Road, have quietly closed—residents reported seeing closed signs on Reddit while the chain has not offered an explanation.  The Arizona Republic

CRIME NEWS

  • Former ABC15 news anchor Stephanie Hockridge, co-founder of Blueacorn from Scottsdale, faces a federal trial today in Fort Worth for alleged wire fraud over PPP loan applications that reportedly netted her and her husband $300 million from claims totaling $12 billion—witnesses include former business partners, customers and two Sedona brothers who pleaded guilty.  ABC15 Arizona

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Axon ended negotiations with Scottsdale over its plan to build a large apartment complex when city leaders and a new state law kept local voters from having a say. The company said its offer to lower the project to 1,700 units did not ease concerns about crowding—forcing it to return to its original plan of 1,882 units.  The Arizona Republic
  • On Wednesday the state House gave preliminary approval for stricter animal cruelty laws that remove provisions for providing suitable drinking water and impose felony penalties for failing to supply necessary medical care—expanding cruelty to also cover inadequate shelter for pets. Rep. Kolodin of Scottsdale and other lawmakers warned that the changes may force pet owners to meet high care standards they cannot afford while a final vote is expected on Thursday before the measure heads to the Senate.  Scottsdale Independent
