- ➤ Tom Jones, a 79-year-old Yavapai elder, veteran and former councilman who fought to protect his tribe’s lands and gaming rights, died July 13 after battling PTSD from his Vietnam service+ he helped block a dam project and led peaceful protests during an FBI raid that paved the way for tribal gaming. He is survived by four children and many relatives who will carry on his legacy in the community. The Arizona Republic
- ➤ Lexie’s Ranch, run by nonprofit Lexie’s Voice, will open this fall near Cactus and Scottsdale roads as an inclusive day program offering daily activities, equine therapy and onsite services for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. The 1.32-acre site will feature an activity barn — with a gym and sensory room — a walking track and a petting zoo with horses, Highland cows and chickens. Scottsdale Independent

- ➤ Yesterday, Central Arizona Project engineers performed a blow off on a 1-mile-long, 9-foot-diameter siphon in northwest Phoenix so inspectors could work on the aqueduct that supplies water to nearly 6 million users. The procedure, which only happens once per decade, is essential for keeping water flowing from Lake Havasu to Tucson & other communities. KJZZ

- ➤ Dr. Erica Grabinski, an internal medicine physician with Optum Primary Care in Scottsdale, has dedicated her career to caring for older adults after volunteering at assisted living facilities (starting in high school) and supporting her family during her grandfather’s battle with dementia. She now treats many patients with memory care needs (including diabetes and heart failure) and offers families essential support and resources. KJZZ
- ➤ High school athletes training in parts of the Valley are advised by Dr. Jimmy Nguyen at Dignity Health Mercy Gilbert Medical Center to schedule practices in cooler times and take extra breaks to avoid heat illness. He said that football players in full gear and distance runners face higher risks—especially during intense sessions—and parents should remind children to speak up if they feel unwell. KJZZ
