Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 5th of August.
Good morning, Scottsdale.
Phoenix-based Banner Health filed for a conditional use permit on July 14 to begin zoning a $400 million, 640,000-square-foot medical campus in north Scottsdale at the southwest corner of Hayden Road and Loop 101.
The project includes a 300-bed hospital and follows May’s groundbreaking of a 120,000-square-foot facility (Banner Health Care Plus) after Banner bought the 48-acre parcel for $57.6 million in March 2023.
Scottsdale’s J+G Steakhouse at the Phoenician resort was named one of the top 100 hotel restaurants in America by a list that used over 10 million diner reviews from June 1 through May 31.
It is the only Scottsdale restaurant on the list, with another spot in Phoenix also earning a 4.6-star rating.
Scottsdale police said a 3-year-old was pulled from a pool at an apartment complex near Scottsdale and McDowell roads last week and taken to a hospital on July 29 where the child died a day later — the Maricopa County Medical Examiner is investigating the cause with no signs of foul play and no criminal charges pending.
Tripadvisor has ranked Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and the Grand Canyon Skywalk among the best U.S. attractions based on traveler reviews — and it also selected a pedal bar crawl in Old Town Scottsdale and a guided hike at Phoenix Mountains Preserve as top experiences.
The awards show many travelers enjoy Arizona’s landmarks and tours.
Bradley Miller and Soham Samal, both from Scottsdale, earned a dean’s list honor at Georgia Tech for maintaining a GPA of at least 3.0 last semester (according to a press release from August 4th).
Tim Daly, CEO of EdNavigator, said summer vacation benefits wealthier students since they can attend camps and work summer jobs (while lower-income kids mostly spend time on screens) and added that proposals such as subsidized job programs and summer vouchers may help narrow this growing inequality. His comments highlight how rising summer heat and high costs further limit outdoor play and enriching activities for many students.
City Manager Greg Caton said a $40 million plan will upgrade Old Town Scottsdale with new sidewalks, landscaping and lighting, expand parking structures and move the Farmers Market based on input from local business leaders.
Public meetings will be held before work begins on the $15.2 million Brown Avenue parking expansion, the Scottsdale Entertainment District garage upgrade and a $7.9 million Main Street improvement — while a $2 million 'Spruce Up Old Town' cleaning effort is already underway.
