COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Scottsdale Fashion Square will partner with the American Red Cross to host a community blood drive on September 4. A Bloodmobile will be parked in the south parking lot from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for donors.  Scottsdale Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rodeo Scottsdale is hosting the West’s Most Western Rodeo kickoff party tomorrow, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. at Foley Ranch in Phoenix—free entry includes ticket giveaways, drink specials, a live show by Marble Heart, and swag from 96.3 Real Country. The three-day professional rodeo will run from Sept. 5 to 7 at the Westworld of Scottsdale Equidome Arena.  Scottsdale Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arizona leaders are working to improve school safety after a deadly shooting in Minneapolis by adding more school police and expanding the state’s School Safety Program. The new plan, backed by House Bill 2074 signed on May 6, calls for increased funding, better training in mental health and privacy, and stronger emergency plans + technology upgrades in schools.  Scottsdale Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The southbound Loop 101 off-ramp at Raintree Drive in Scottsdale will close for 60 days starting Tuesday night, Sept. 2 as crews work to reconstruct it for a wider design—drivers should exit at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and use the southbound frontage road until the ramp reopens by early November.  Scottsdale Independent
  • Johnny Bowers, a Colorado man, pled guilty to felony fraud and forgery for defrauding over $110000 from Arizona’s Empowerment Scholarship Account program and his plea has sparked a dispute between Attorney General Kris Mayes and Superintendent Tom Horne over program oversight.  The Arizona Republic
  • Attorney General Kris Mayes sued Reynolds Consumer Products on Wednesday after alleging that its Hefty Recycling Bags packaging misled Arizonans into buying a product that harms recycling equipment + the lawsuit claims the company profited by deceiving consumers.  KJZZ
  • The Scottsdale City Council expressed strong support for WestWorld during its work study meeting on Aug. 18 and outlined plans for short-term repairs within 90 days and a long-term infrastructure master plan to address operating challenges—members stressed the need for a task force to review performance measures and resolve issues flagged in a 2022 audit. Council members will resume voting on other local matters at upcoming meetings as the facility continues to play a key role in Scottsdale's equestrian and economic life.  Scottsdale Progress
  • Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes filed a lawsuit on Aug. 20 against Reynolds Consumer Products, owner of Hefty, alleging that its 'Blue, Clear, and Recycling' bags are falsely marketed as recyclable even though soft plastics prevent proper recycling—she seeks up to $10,000 per violation and an injunction to stop the deceptive practices.  The Arizona Republic

  • The Arizona Cardinals and NFC West rivals Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers have unveiled new Rivalries uniforms that honor Arizona tradition and team spirit. The Cardinals will wear the alternate look in their Thursday Night Football game on Sept. 25 at State Farm Stadium — created by Nike and the NFL — as part of a once-per-season presentation.  The Arizona Republic
