COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A youth baseball team from Native Nations made history by playing in the 2025 Babe Ruth World Series in Branson, Missouri after being picked from over 160 players at Salt River Pima–Maricopa Indian Community near Scottsdale—former pro DJ Carrasco said the program will build on this success by expanding camps and partnerships to offer more opportunities for Native athletes internationally.  Arizona Digital Free Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Eight Arizona resorts in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Sedona completed multimillion-dollar renovations this year—updating guest rooms, common areas and event venues. More improvements, including new rooms and upgraded meeting spaces, are planned before the year ends.  The Arizona Republic

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson stars as MMA pioneer Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine where he shows a tougher, more vulnerable side than his usual roles. The film opens Friday, Oct. 3 and is based on a 2002 documentary that follows Kerr's fight with addiction—critics praise his powerful performance.  The Arizona Republic

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Coronado High School Fall Band Concert will take place on Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Eugene L. Hanson Auditorium at 7501 E. Virginia Ave—featuring the Coronado Symphonic Band, wind ensemble, percussion ensemble, marching band and more, with free admission.  Scottsdale Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Scottsdale Fire Department opened a new fire station serving the northern area on Sept. 22 — the 12,000 square-foot facility cost $13.7 million, includes four apparatus bays, sleeping quarters for 12 firefighters and other key features, and will host an open house on Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. This station adds to the department's total of 16 locations that serve more than 245,000 residents.  KTAR
  • A planned Old Town parking garage is moving ahead despite Mayor Lisa Borowsky’s strong opposition — designers presented two options, Western and Adobe, at a Sept. 18 meeting and construction will begin next summer as public engagement continues. The project cost is estimated at around $15.5 million — and it will replace the existing two-level lot with a four-level facility.  Scottsdale Progress
  • An audit report says the Scottsdale Fire Department spends too much on overtime because many top leaders are nearing retirement and there is no written plan to train replacements. Fire Chief Tom Shannon said he is working on a new hiring and training plan — a move supported by city council members who want to keep the department strong.  Scottsdale Progress

HEALTH NEWS

  • Maricopa County Public Health reported that as of Sept. 20, 156 heat-related deaths were confirmed—down from 265 last year—with 370 deaths under investigation compared to 652 in 2024. Officials said better heat-relief efforts like rideshare rides and water distribution helped lower the numbers.  ABC15 Arizona
  • In 2024, Arizona hospitals recorded over 5,000 heat-related emergency visits and nearly 1,600 inpatient admissions—a sharp rise from previous years. Health officials and state leaders planned to use the hospital data to guide new measures that protect residents from rising heat risks.  The Arizona Republic

  • Special Olympics Arizona's unified volleyball team will travel to Poland for the Unified Volleyball World Cup from Oct. 5-8, and its 15-member delegation includes 6 athletes+6 unified partners+2 coaches. The team will compete in the men's/mixed division against eight international teams to show its commitment to inclusion.  KTAR
  • Last fall, Clayton Liebman of Notre Dame Prep was injured during a football game when a hit to his chest caused him to collapse and led to emergency brain surgery at HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center. He is now repeating his sophomore year while helping coach the junior varsity team and plans to try driving by his 17th birthday in December.  Arizona Digital Free Press
