COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Waste Not — a local nonprofit focused on reducing food waste and hunger — will host its 35th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser on Oct. 18–19 at the Arizona Taco Fest held at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale. Local artists will display handcrafted ceramic bowls to raise awareness about food insecurity while supporting over 85 nonprofit agencies in the area.  Arizona Digital Free Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Coffee Plantation, a Scottsdale coffee shop founded over 35 years ago, reopened after a major renovation that refreshed its interior and updated its menu with healthy food options at 7366 E. Shea Blvd. Owner Omar Karkoutli said the changes position the shop for a new phase of growth.  ABC15 Arizona
  • Axon Enterprise Inc.’s $1.3B mixed-use headquarters project on a 72-acre Scottsdale site stalled nearly a year after city council approved it on Nov. 19th, 2024 amid legal battles and political discord. Construction remains inactive + officials continue discussing the future of the plan, which included residential units, a hotel, and restaurants.  ABC15 Arizona

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Holiday Prelude XXXVIII will be held on Dec. 5 at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa (5402 E. Lincoln Drive), featuring a fashion show, luncheon and shopping boutique designed to raise funds for charity and arts programs. The Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestras and Phoenix Theatre Company Guild will join to create a festive holiday celebration (reserved seating available for up to 10 guests).  Scottsdale Independent

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Arizona Public Service plans to bring in more natural gas from Texas by partnering with a pipeline company to meet growing power demands from AI data centers and an increasing population. The utility said the move will help keep lights on during extreme heat, and rising energy use may lead to higher residential bills & a need for additional capacity in the coming years.  KJZZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Scottsdale Unified School District announced that Yavapai Elementary is now a Blue Zones Project approved school—highlighting its efforts to help students eat healthy, stay active, and connect socially while joining other district campuses focused on wellness.  Arizona Digital Free Press
  • Jay Clements, director of the Equine Science Program at Scottsdale Community College, has launched Arizona's first college-based equine massage therapy certificate program (training students to work with competitive horses). The program will support the growing need for therapeutic care in Scottsdale's high-level equine sports industry.  KJZZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • WIC clinics remain open in Arizona amid a federal shutdown that risks cutting off funds when a temporary $300 million fix ends at the end of October. State health officials said they are watching the situation closely and will update services if federal support runs out.  KJZZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • TGen’s fifth annual Runway for Research fashion show will take place on Friday, October 17 at 9 a.m. at Neiman Marcus at Scottsdale Fashion Square — the event is a collaboration between Neiman Marcus, Scottsdale Fashion Square and City of Hope Phoenix to support women’s cancer research and treatment.  Scottsdale Independent
  • Scottsdale families planning Halloween celebrations will be urged to follow safety tips such as staying in groups, planning routes with a curfew, using cell phones for tracking, and brightening costumes—measures that will help protect children on crowded streets.   • Kidder Mathews brokered the $7.2 million sale of a 38-acre residential site in North Scottsdale for buyer C&W Investments LLC and seller Denise Bixler—at the southeast corner of 128th Street and Ranch Gate Rd.
