COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, Arizona Humane Society, Arizona Small Dog Rescue, Arizona Animal Welfare League, and HALO Animal Rescue have 20 pets available for adoption in the Valley—mostly cats and dogs waiting for a new home. Locals can visit these shelters during business hours to meet the animals and learn about the process.  ABC15 Arizona

  • Hancock Builders founder Greg Hancock will move from CEO to chairman while Kelly Whiteley is set to become the new CEO, and the firm will expand its portfolio into for-rent, for-sale, and commercial contracting projects—continuing its legacy of quality housing in the region.  Arizona Digital Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chaparral High School in Scottsdale will host the Chaparral Coffee House Talent Show on October 28th featuring student acts from vocalists and bands to comedians and string groups—guests can buy desserts and drinks with tickets at $20 per seat or $75 for a table of four.  Scottsdale Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Math and Science Academy at Mohave Middle School is now open—Scottsdale Unified School District expanded the program to offer a hands-on STEM curriculum for middle school students. Mohave Middle School will host an Open House on Monday, Oct. 27 from 6-8 p.m. for families to meet staff and learn more about the academy.  City Sun Times
  • Scottsdale Unified School District invites families to visit elementary schools for Kindergarten Roundup to learn about enrollment and classroom routines — the event lets parents tour campuses, meet teachers, and get guidance on the transition to kindergarten with dates varying by school.  Scottsdale Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maricopa County declared a local emergency in Tempe after Monday’s microburst damaged hundreds of homes, following the city’s own emergency order aimed at securing federal disaster funding. Mayor Corey Woods said the declaration will help speed up recovery efforts (the storm dropped about a half-inch of rain in 10 minutes) (as many repairs are still needed).  KJZZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Banner Health has introduced a new AI system that tests diabetic patients for diabetic retinopathy—a leading cause of blindness—at 24 centers in Arizona, giving fast results during a simple exam. The tool streamlines diagnosis by removing extra steps, so patients learn about their eye health sooner.  Arizona Digital Free Press
